General
Complex systems are not easily grasped by just looking at their components. What you see depends on your point of view, and it is important to include multiple perspectives. Big issues like sustainability often seem daunting. But what if we consider complexity to be an opportunity instead?
‘Embracing complexity’ is the theme of the 144th Dies Natalis of VU Amsterdam. They hereby cordially invite you to this celebration on Thursday 21 November 2024.
Linda Douw, chair of the university review committee and associate professor of neuroscience and VU dialogue coordinator Sem Barendse will engage in conversation during the celebration. They will discuss how different perspectives and having empathy can help maintain hope in complex social issues.
During the Dies, an honorary doctorate will be awarded to writer Marilynne Robinson. She is known for her profound reflections on ethics, religion and the human condition, and has a unique voice in the literary landscape. Her work inspires to reflect on freedom, justice and the role of community – key themes in her novels as well.
In addition, Griffioen's dance group will provide an inspiring performance, depicting the complex and hopeful themes both rhythmically and physically.
The complete programme can be found on the VU website.
