17 and 19 October 2022

Background

You may be guiding junior scientists and interns in doing research. Good supervision is essential, not only for the research project itself, but also for persons that you are guiding. With good supervision, they are much more likely to enjoy the work, thrive as professionals, and bring their studies to a good end. But what makes you a good supervisor?

Goal

In this workshop, you will reflect on your experience as supervisor. With about 8 colleagues, you will discuss up to 9 situations in which you have to decide on how to act as supervisor. In this way, you (1) will clarify the goals and values that drive you as supervisor, (2) reach consensus with your colleagues about what is essential for good supervision, and (3) become more aware of your own style of supervision.

Video

The 9 situations correspond to 9 tips that are illustrated in this video: How to guide someone - YouTube. This video (2.45 minutes) expresses the basic idea of this workshop, which is that supervision is about encouraging and supporting people who are eager to learn while they work towards goals that you have set together.

For whom?

For any person who has experience with guiding junior scientists (e.g. PhD students) or interns (e.g. Master students) in carrying out an own research project. You want to reflect on your supervising behavior, and you wish to become (even) more effective, supporting, and encouraging in your role.
