To do:
The cum laude classification procedure is described in the University of Amsterdam Doctorate Regulations 2020, articles 27 and 28. Check these articles for full description and conditions
Taking the assessments based on the specifications in the assessment form, Appendix A, into consideration, the supervisor may submit a detailed reasoned proposal to the dean, no later than eight weeks before the date of the conferral ceremony, explaining why a ‘cum laude’ distinction is merited (see step 5 PhD graduation)
Note: The (co-)supervisors are not allowed to inform the members of the Doctorate Committee on their personal assessment on cum laude
Note: The request will be taken into consideration, if all members of the Doctorate Committee have stated on the form whether they believe the thesis merits the cum laude classification. A maximum of one vote against, will be accepted
Note: Preferably send in this request (via e-mail) at the same time as the Title Page Package (see below) is being delivered personally at the Office of Doctorate Affairs (address)
Submit via email the following documents:
- the accompanying email with which the manuscript has been submitted to the voting committee members for review
- a detailed reasoned proposal for a cum laude (in Dutch) in which you include the names of four external independent referees
- a PDF of the manuscript
Points of attention for the designation of external referees:
- it is desirable that of the four external referees, two referees from abroad are appointed
- add the full addresses, correct e-mail addresses and telephone numbers of all referees to be designated
- the nominated external referees must be completely independent (no co-authors of previous publications); the supervisors are not allowed to contact the referees on the cum laude application
- external referees are given six weeks to assess the thesis. Therefore, when sending a link to the thesis, pay attention to the expiry date
Note: The dean may decide not to continue the procedure for awarding a cum laude or reject the proposed referees
Note: If one or both of the referees have advised negatively, the procedure will be ended and the distinction cum laude is not awarded
Necessary documents:
The Title Page Package (see step 6 PhD trajectory)
Tips:
The cum laude procedure is strictly confidential. The PhD Candidate is not informed of the possibility of a cum laude distinction
After assessment and positive advice from both the referees, the procedure will be continued, which means that during the meeting after the defence it will be decided whether the distinction cum laude will be conferred or not. The distinction cum laude is not awarded if more than one of the persons entitled to vote in the meeting, vote against
