To do:
Sometimes a (desired) partnership between two universities is a reason to opt for a Joint Doctorate programme. This may be prescribed in an EU grant. There may also be proportional funding for research by both universities. Note that it will take quite some effort to come to an agreement
The Joint Doctorate trajectory and graduation are described in the University of Amsterdam Doctorate Regulations 2020, article 40. Check this article for the full description and conditions
Requests for a Joint Doctorate are submitted by the intended supervisor or the programme leader, via the Office of Doctorate Affairs and the Amsterdam UMC/AMC dean, in writing to the UvA rector magnificus
In general this is the course to come to a Joint agreement:
- If you consider to come to a Joint Doctorate Agreement, please send an e-mail to the Office of Doctorate Affairs and ask for the actual 'Joint Doctorate Request Form' and 'Partnership Agreement Joint Doctorate' form
- This form must be completed in full online by the supervisor, printed, signed by supervisor and dean with a pen and then forwarded, along with the complete documentation required, to the UvA Doctorate Board by post
- As from this moment, the communication between the UvA Rector's Office and the supervisor involved is running directly, without interference of the Office of Doctorate Affairs
- After the Partnership Agreement has been signed by all parties, the PhD candidate can do a request for admission to the PhD trajectory
Necessary documents:
- Joint Doctorate Operational Regulations (English / Dutch)
- Joint Doctorate Request Form (via the Office of Doctorate Affairs)
- Partnership Agreement Joint Doctorate (via the Office of Doctorate Affairs)
Tips:
Also check the information for PhD Candidates under Step 1 (starting your PhD) in PhD trajectory
Note: In case of a Joint Doctorate agreement, the PhD candidate defends his thesis at one university and he gets one certificate. Explanatory notes on different subjects, such as on the location of the defence and on the title page for the manuscript are included in the Joint Doctorate agreement
Note: A Joint Doctorate needs to be requested within the first year of the PhD trajectory, and needs to be agreed upon and signed, within 12 months after the request
Note: The PhD candidate can only be admitted to the doctoral programme after the Joint Doctorate Agreement has been signed. To check the authenticity of your documents, the PhD candidate who doesn't hold a Dutch Master’s degree must make the exemption request in person at the Office of Doctorate Affairs, E2-176 (AMC).
