The Amsterdam UMC PhD Science & Awards Day is a highly recommended course for all PhD candidates. Don’t forget to visit the SDB Leerplatform as well!
The next Science & Awards Day will take place on 6 March 2026. If you wish to compete for one of the prizes, you can submit your poster between 1 November and 15 December. The most exceptional posters will be recognized: three awards will be awarded by the PhD Poster Assessment Committee, and one by the Amsterdam UMC Client Board.
If you are not interested in the prizes, you may submit your poster up to and including 15 February 2026.
Important: If you submit a poster, your presence at the Science & Awards Day on 6 March 2026 is expected!
By attending the event, presenting your poster, and participating in two workshops, you will earn 1 EC.
All researchers and (co)supervisors are invited to join the Science & Awards Day!

Application & requirements, selection
Application & requirements
- You are an Amsterdam UMC PhD candidate
- You are free to choose your own poster design. If you already have a poster from a previous event, feel free to submit it!
- Be sure to indicate on your poster the relevant Research Institute your research is affiliated with, as well as one of the categories listed below.
- Submit a digital version of your poster (in PDF format) to the Doctoral School, and mention in the accompanying email that you are submitting the poster for participation in the PhD Poster Award.
Please note: All submitted posters will be showcased in a slideshow on digital boards throughout the event and will also be included in a digital poster book.
Selection & assessment
- A jury composed of experienced Amsterdam UMC scientists from various disciplines and one PhD candidate will independently evaluate the submitted posters and abstracts.
- They will consider factors such as presentation, quality, clarity, comprehensibility of the information, layout, and recognizability (Amsterdam UMC + Research Institute), as well as methodology and the societal and clinical impact of the research. For more information, see the 'Tips' section below.
During the Science & Awards Day
- If you submit a poster, your presence at the Science & Awards Day is expected.
Three PhD candidates whose posters are selected as the best will be invited to give a 3-minute pitch during the lunch break. The jury will assess these pitches and select the overall award winner.
- The top-rated PhD candidate will present their pitch once more, in plenary, just before the award ceremony.
- This PhD candidate will also be invited to join the PhD Poster Assessment Committee for the following year.
- The recipient of the Client Board Award will also be invited to give a 3-minute pitch during the lunch break and again in plenary before the ceremony.
- Other participants have a chance to win one of up to six incentive prizes, which will also be awarded during the Science & Awards Day. These selected PhD candidates will be invited to pitch their research during the lunch break as well.

Please note: After submitting your entry, you will receive a confirmation of receipt from the Doctoral School within two weeks. If you do not receive this confirmation, please contact us!
Tips:
Suggestions for Creating an Effective Poster
- Include a photo of yourself so attendees can recognize you.
- Use a short, straightforward title.
- Focus on conveying one clear message—avoid including your entire paper on the poster.
- Clearly state the objective of your research, its connection to patients, and its clinical relevance.
- Provide information about your methods and statistical analysis.
- Remember: less is more—aim for a balanced mix of visuals and text.
