General

The Amsterdam Center for Health Communication (ACHC) is hosting its fall symposium on Friday November 24th. This time the theme is ""Communication for Mental Health(s): Promoting Inclusion and Diversity." The symposium is chaired by Barbara Schouten and Gian Hernandez.

Program

The symposium lasts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and participation is free. During this symposium, the latest findings around inclusion and diversity in mental healthcare will be presented, and we will discuss how we can use communication strategies and interventions to improve access and care for vulnerable groups, such as migrants and refugees.

The first keynote lecture at this symposium will be given by Bram Orobio de Castro (UvA). This lecture emphasizes the need to shift from ineffective universal psycho-education to active engagement in practicing social and self-regulatory skills, highlighting successful studies with marginalized families and children with disruptive behavior problems as evidence.

The second keynote lecture will be given by Jeroen Knipscheer (Utrecht University). This lecture addresses the higher risk of mental health issues among refugees and migrants, proposing a culturally sensitive approach to enhance evidence-based treatment, emphasizing cultural competence for mental health professionals and the use of culturally adapted interventions, including diagnostic tools and therapies.
