Research

Community Genetics and Public Health Genomics

The interdisciplinary research group Community Genetics and Public Health Genomics is affiliated to the Department of Clinical Genetics, Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc.

Community Genetics and Public Health Genomics are emerging fields of activities involving both research and application. The main goal of research is to investigate and promote the responsible application of medical genetics at population or group level, to maximise benefit for the individuals in the community and for public health, and to minimise potential harm.

Genome Diagnostics

Amsterdam UMC provides molecular testing through their joint Amsterdam Genome Dx website: www.amsterdamgenomedx.com.

We offer next-generation sequencing panels along with: conventional single gene sequencing, deletion/duplication testing, methylation analyses and array-CGH for copy number analysis. In addition to this we provide prenatal diagnostic testing services. As a non-profit organization we can offer competitive rates and for residents of EEA countries, we accept S2 forms.

Medical Genomics

The section of Medical Genomics (MGA) is embedded in the Department of Human Genetics (Cluster 3) and currently consists of approximately 20 people located within the Faculty of Life Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit. There is a close collaboration with the Department of Biological Psychology (Faculty of Psychology & Paedagogy) of the Vrije Universiteit.

The sequencing and genotyping facility is hosted by the section Medical Genomics and offers sequencing and genotyping services to research groups on the VU and location VUMC campus

Oncogenetics

The division Oncogenetics of the Clinical Genetics department has a longstanding interest in processes essential for the maintenance of genomic stability. The chromosomal instability syndromes Fanconi anemia, Roberts syndrome and Warsaw Breakage syndrome are currently studied as model systems. Closely related projects focus on breast cancer susceptibility genes, oxygen tolerance and retinoblastoma.

The research of the division Oncogenetics is embedded in the CCA/V-ICI research program Oncogenesis.
