About us
We perform diagnostic work for the clinical departments of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc and for other hospitals and general practitioners in the surrounding region of Amsterdam. To this end, we have all modern infrastructure to execute histo-diagnostics, immunodiagnostics and molecular diagnostics at a high level. The diagnostic volume of the department is among that of the biggest academic departments in The Netherlands.
We do research with a largely translational character based on a solid foundation of more basic research and facilitate the translational research of other departments.
Lastly, we teach medical and biomedical students, technicians and residents in pathology.
Research
Pathology has a central role in multiple research institutes within Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, and research at the department of pathology of location VUmc covers major topics in Oncology, Cardiovascular diseases, Neuropathology, and Immunology. Of these, oncological research hast the largest volume. Research at the Department of Pathology focuses both on basic and translational aspects. In early disease these research programmes deal with pathogenesis and prevention, and in advanced disease the main issues are profiling, biological classification and monitoring. In addition, a major focus exists on cell based therapies.

Education
The department of pathology is involved in education of residents in Pathology and Medical Immunology. The educational activities are also focused on various bachelor and master such as:
- Medicine
- Biomedical and life sciences
- Dentistry
- Research master programs Oncology, Neurosciences and Cardiovascular Diseases.
In addition post graduate courses are organized and laboratory personnel at various levels (HLO, MLO) are being trained. The department offers also opportunities for traineeships.
