'Failing to use available science is costly and harmful; it leads to overuse of unhelpful care, underuse of effective care and errors in execution.' Don Berwick JAMA 2003.
This underscores the importance of de-implementation which is the process of identifying and reducing or discontinuing practices that are outdated, ineffective, or even harmful. De-implementation is a critical and increasingly studied area within implementation science, yet it remains difficult to achieve because of various biases. Additionally, there is a psychological preference to do something rather than nothing, even if it may not be effective. These factors make de-implementation a challenging process.
