AmsCIS Journal Club: Realist Evaluation

We would like to invite you to a new edition of our AmsCIS Journal Club!

In our upcoming hour-long session, we will be exploring realist evaluation methodology. To delve into this topic, we have selected two publications:

1. Article describing the methodology: Using realist evaluation to open the black box of knowledge translation: a state-of-the-art review | Implementation Science |https://doi.org/10.1186/s13012-014-0115-y

2. Article describing a practical example: Audit and feedback to reduce unwarranted clinical variation at scale: a realist study of implementation strategy mechanisms | Implementation Science |https://doi.org/10.1186/s13012-023-01324-w We'll discuss the article through the following questions:

  • Where does this methodology fit within the broad spectrum of implementation science?
    - Realist evaluation vs Theory of Change?
  • In what way can you use this article in your own research?
    - What are the pros and cons of employing realist evaluation?

The Journal Club is an initiative of AmsCIS and will be organized multiple times a year.
