Dr Chris Wymant, Senior Researcher at the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute, will present his publication: "A highly virulent variant of HIV-1 circulating in the Netherlands" to appear in this week’s issue of Science.
His presentation will take place Monday 7th February at 1:00PM via TEAMS.
Brief outline of the research: As the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated, new mutations in viral genetic sequences can have significant impacts on the virus’s transmissibility and the damage it causes. For many years, there have been concerns that this could arise in the HIV-1 virus. This has now been confirmed with the discovery of highly virulent HIV strain in the Netherlands, in an international collaborative study with key contributions from Stichting HIV Monitoring, Amsterdam UMC, and led by researchers from the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute.
