According to the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations, the outbreak of a new variant of the mpox virus constitutes an international health risk. Professor of skin infections and dermatologist Henry de Vries shares his concerns on EenVandaag.

De Vries explains that there is currently no acute threat in the Netherlands, as there are few to no infections. The existing infections are of the 2022 variant and were contracted abroad. However, the current outbreak in Africa involves a more dangerous variant than that of 2022. Given how quickly diseases can spread in today’s globalized world, de Vries believes it is sensible to restart the vaccination program.
