A year ago, Amsterdam UMC, VU, and UvA joined forces to establish the Amsterdam Cohort Hub (ACH). This platform brings together large, long-term studies that collect data from large groups of citizens, often focusing on lifestyle and health. Researchers now have easier access to valuable data. The goal? A healthier society.

Major Achievements in 1 Year

After just one year, the results are already visible. Fifteen Amsterdam cohort studies are now collaborating under the ACH umbrella. This has led to increased sharing of experiences, more knowledge exchange, and new joint initiatives.

Cohort studies teaming up under the ACH umbrella

Here are a few examples:

  • A comprehensive overview has been created of the questionnaires used to measure mental health and cognition, detailing their various advantages and disadvantages. This helps new studies better choose which tool to use.
  • The equipment used by the various studies for data collection has been mapped out. Many of these devices are only used for short periods. By sharing this equipment, future costs can be reduced.
  • A website has been launched with information about all ACH studies. It explains what research is being conducted and what data ACH holds, allowing other researchers to utilize this data for their own studies.

This is just the beginning. In one year, significant strides have been made in strengthening the network, sharing knowledge, and enhancing the infrastructure for cohort research.

Collaboration with Other UMCs

The collaboration has had an impact beyond Amsterdam. Cooperation with other UMCs has also been strengthened, leading to the creation of the Cohort Hub Netherlands, where common goals are pursued. Together, standards are being developed for data collection and for defining the units used in research, known as metadata. This contributes to linking and making patient data and research data accessible on a national level.

Future Plans

In the coming year, ACH has new projects in the pipeline, and the hub will be strengthened with new members. An electronic platform is being developed to compile all the collected information, making this knowledge easily accessible for everyone. Additionally, 15 other cohort studies have expressed interest in joining ACH.
