APH researcher Anton Kunst (professor in Social Epidemiology at Amsterdam UMC), together with Statistics Netherlands, maps social differences in excess mortality during the corona epidemic. Migrants in the Netherlands died relatively often from corona virus.
In the first nine weeks of the corona epidemic (week 11 until week 19), there was an excess death of almost 9,000 people compared to the normal estimation of this period. In total, almost 36,000 people deceased while it was estimated that, without the epidemic, there would have been approximately 27,000 deaths. This comes down to a relative excess death of 32 percent. The expected number of deceased and excess death are estimated based on the number of deceased in the weeks prior, adjusted for seasonal factors. This is reported by the CBS, Amsterdam UMC and the RIVM based on the preliminary mortality rates per week.
