Each year we organize multiple events with a trending or overarching theme for both our researchers and external stakeholders. At these events our researchers can expand their network, create new collaborations and exchange knowledge on important topics.

Annual meetings

Annual Meeting 2024

On November 19, 2024 Amsterdam Public Health hosted her 8th Annual Meeting, themed 'Impact in Public Health: How to really connect with society'. With more than 400 participants we explored the connection between science and society and how we can create impact in public health. We kicked off with an interactive opening by Frank Kupper, followed by inspiring keynotes from Sander Begeer, Vincent van Loenen and Julia van Weert. APH’s best impact practices were presented by Bibian van der Voorn and Vincent van Vugt.

During the lunch break, a stakeholder analysis workshop was led by our impact developer Diane Schöller, and 76 APH researchers presented their work during poster presentations. In the afternoon, parallel theme sessions were held, organized by APH research programs. We concluded the day with ceremonies for the ZonMw Parel Award, the APH Poster Awards and the APH Impact Booster Grants. A collaborative session focused on creating impact together with drums and, of course, plenty of networking, wrapped up this incredible day. The APH Annual Meeting 2024 was an insightful and successful event, where impact in public health was explored from a variety of inspiring perspectives.

Annual Meeting 2023

On November 21st, 2023 Amsterdam Public Health hosted her 7th Annual Meeting, themed 'Diversity, Equity and Inclusion' (DEI) in both the academic working environment and in research practice. Host Mariëtte Hoogsteder, chair of the APH Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) committee, together with DEI committee member Mai Chin A Paw, provided a short introduction about the vision of the DEI committee and their plans for the upcoming period. Four keynotes took stage: storyteller Aminata Cairo, Dr. Petra Verdonk, Dr. Hafez Ismaili M'hamdi and Prof. Hinda Haned.

The APH Annual Meeting 2023 closed this interesting and fun day with a spectacular performance, performed by dancer and inspirational speaker Redo. With his slogan ‘No excuses, No limits’ and his performance, the audience was really impressed and inspired.

Annual meeting 2022

On November 1st, 2022 Amsterdam Public Health hosted her 6th Annual Meeting, themed 'Digitalization'. The new APH ‘Digital Health’ research program was presented and two keynotes, Dr. André Marquand (Principal Investigator at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour) and Dr. Emma Beauxis-Aussalet (Assistant Professor of Ethical Computing at VU Amsterdam) took stage. Also PhD candidate Hafize Demirci presented her research, the implementation of virtual reality-technology in health care, and provided insight into virtual reality research within Amsterdam UMC.

APH networking afternoon 2021 with Andre Kuipers

On Tuesday November 9, about 140 APH researchers joined APH’s networking afternoon, with the theme 'sustainability'. This light version of APH’s Annual Meeting was held in Theater de Rode Hoed in Amsterdam. APH Director Martine de Bruijne opened the meeting and shared APH’s ambitions on this theme for the coming years. Astronaut André Kuipers provided an inspiring keynote presentation about his view from space on sustainability.

APH Annual Meeting 2019

On October 31, 2019, the 4th Annual Meeting of APH took place. About 400 researchers visited the conference held in the cozy De Meervaart theater in Amsterdam. During the plenary and parallel theme sessions, researchers were challenged to discuss relevant questions concerning the theme of the day ‘Urban Health’. In the plenary morning session, three keynotes took stage: city councilor Simone Kukenheim, Steve Appleton and APH researcher Wilma Waterlander. The day offered many opportunities for researchers, politicians, as well as community stakeholders to forge new collaborations. Due to the great number of visitors, the possibility for networking, and the inspiring atmosphere, the 4th Annual Meeting of APH was a great success!

Annual Meeting 2018

On November 22, 2018, about 425 researchers and relations in the field of public health gathered for the 3rd Annual Meeting of APH. The meeting was held in the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam.Three keynotes took stage. Professor Gerd Kortuem, Robert Grant, Data Sherpa and founder of BayesCamp and Dataviz and APH researcher Heleen Riper.

In the afternoon, the eight research programs organized attractive sessions on a broad range of APH research topics. At the end of the day, a vivid presentation was delivered with football supporters of the EuroFIT study.

Spring meetings

Spring Meeting 2024

On Monday, April 22, the APH Spring Meeting 2024 took place. This year, all sessions focused on the theme 'A brighter future'. In addition to attending various interesting sessions, participants could take part in the APH Inspirational Quote Contest 2024. Various mottos from APH researchers, reflecting what drives them in life and/or work, were shared, and the winners received a prize. This resulted in a wall full of inspirational quotes of what keeps APH researchers moving to 'do their thing' fiercely and fully in life.

Spring Meeting 2023

On Monday, April 17, 2023, an APH Spring Meeting took place with the theme: Connect for Health. Participants attended diverse interesting sessions and workshops. At the end of the day, during the drinks reception, they also had the opportunity to participate and vote in the APH Photo Contest 2023 exhibition.

Spring Meeting 2022

From Tuesday April 5 until Friday April 8 APH researchers were connected online during the Week of APH Spring Sessions 2022 themed ‘A Healthy Mind’. In sum, a very successful week with a variety of sessions and workshops. From an entertaining opening with three mental health experts, to parallel research program sessions and a webinar ‘Omdenken’. Our goal of the week, to get connected with fellow researchers on an important topic: mental health, succeeded!

Week of APH Spring Sessions 2021

From Tuesday April 13 until Friday April 16 APH researchers were connected online during the Week of APH Spring Sessions 2021. In sum, a very successful week with a variety of sessions and workshops. From an entertaining opening with an introduction of our visiting professor David Chambers playing his guitar, to a pitch competition and Pubquiz. Also his week, four online workshop were offered to APH researchers. In the workshop ‘How to present online?’, a workshop ‘Recognizing and neutralizing stress for PhDs and Postdocs’, a workshop 'Visualize your communication' and a workshop ‘How attention heals: Mindfulness for doctors and scientists'. Our goal of this week, to get connected with fellow researchers, succeeded!

APH Spring Meeting 2019

On May 14, 2019, about 300 researchers and relations in the field of public health gathered for the 2nd Spring Meeting of APH. The meeting was held at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The focus of this Spring Meeting was on the fascinating field of Personalized Medicine for Health and Prevention. The afternoon started with parallel program sessions of the 8 APH research programs. After a short break the plenary session was held in the Aula of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The keynote talks of Professor Paolo Villari from the University of Rome and Professor Harald Schmidt from Maastricht University provided us with two different perspectives on the near future of Personalized Medicine. The afternoon was continued by Manou Anselma, Yasaman Vali, and Trees Juurlink, three excellent APH researchers that inspired us with their work in the context of Personalized Medicine within APH with a ‘PechaKucha’ presentation.

Junior meetings

APH Junified 2024

On June 25, 2024, Junified took place at Hotel Casa Amsterdam with the theme: Boost Your Impact! Participants could attend an inspiring keynote and interactive workshops about: What makes science newsworthy? How can you create impact? How can you improve your online presence? And what is creative science communication? The day concluded with the awarding of the APH Poetry Competition.

APH Junified 2023

June 29th, we hosted our annual event for early and midcareer researchers ‘Junified’. This year Junified was hosted at Hotel CASA in Amsterdam. The theme of the day was self-development, focusing on ‘Boost your Growth!’. This theme was reflected on in the keynote and workshops. Dionne Kringos, vice-director of APH moderated this inspiring afternoon.

APH Junified 2022

This year APH hosted this afternoon in a theatrical setting at the VU Griffioen theatre in the beautiful New University (NU) building at the VU campus. The theme of the day was ‘Boost your Balance’. This theme was reflected on in all sessions. Dionne Kringos, vice-director of APH, moderated this inspiring afternoon. Keynote Dai Carter, former Dutch Special Forces, took stage and shared the importance of mental strength and improving the mental strength of people and organizations.

APH Junified 2021

On September 2, the very first APH Junified event took place at Rosarium in the Amstelpark, Amsterdam. This event was exclusively for APH early career researchers and ‘The Next Generation Researchers’ was the theme of this edition. The event was kicked off with an inspirational keynote by Prabath Nanayakkara (Professor in Acute Internal Medicine at Amsterdam UMC) about his own life and career path.
