The Emma Children’s Hospital of the Amsterdam UMC combines its knowledge and expertise in the field of complex abdominal disorders. At the Amsterdam Pediatric Abdominal Center, children from all over the Netherlands can visit a multidisciplinary team of experts with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract and other abdominal organs.

Through our combined knowledge, skills and care we hope to contribute to the best possible care for children with complex abdominal disorders. This makes us leading in the Netherlands and among the top centers in the world.

Through scientific research we hope to increase our own knowledge, and also that of others. The knowledge acquired is shared with all healthcare providers involved, by providing education and presentations at (inter)national conferences or (inter)national network meetings.

Research

Clinical research is primarily aimed at improving the outcome and quality of care for children with complex abdominal disorders, with large international centers being the benchmark. Research is also being conducted into the prevention of diseases and complications. We collaborate with centers in the Netherlands, Europe and the rest of the world.

Abstract Book EUPSA Congress 2024

Researchers of the Amsterdam Pediatric Abdominal Centere attended the 2024 European Pediatric Surgeons' Association (EUPSA) conference in Italy. They made an abstract book of all the research they presented!

There are many active projects at the Amsterdam Pediatric Abdominal Center, below is a selection of five exciting, ongoing projects.

Antibiotics versus Primary Appendectomy in Children with simple appendicitis (APAC-trial) The hypothesis of the APAC trial is that antibiotic treatment in children with simple appendicitis is non-inferior to surgery.

Best treatment options for complex appendicitis in children (CAPP-study) The CAPP study is a national prospective cohort study comparing different treatments for children with complex appendicitis.

Worldwide study on neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix in children (Appendix NET-study) The purpose of this project is to investigate whether the comprehensive second operation on the colon is necessary in children in the high-risk tumor group

Hernia Endoscopic oR opeN repair In chIldren Analysis (HERNIIA-2) The aim of the HERNIIA-2 study, is to investigate the most (cost-) effective way to repair a groin hernia in children between 0-16 years.

Aetiology of renal and urinary tract anomalies defines Diagnostic Efficacy and Clinical Outcome (ArtDECO) The ArtDECO study is a national study on the cause and prognosis of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract.
