Organizing clinical oncological research requires knowledge in various fields. In addition to medical knowledge, logistical, legal and financial expertise is also required. For many doctors/investigators, planning and conducting a high-quality clinical trial is not necessarily something for which they have received training. The Dutch Oncology Research Platform (DORP) was formed to support clinical investigators throughout different phases of clinical studies.

How does DORP contribute?
The progression of clinical research from the initial idea to the implementation of results goes through various phases in which DORP can contribute by connecting investigators to expertise and knowledge. DORP’s Clinical Trial Roadmap outlines the consecutive phases of a clinical oncological trial and details what is needed at each step.

DORP starts by asking questions to help you get to the core of the research idea and see whether and where appropriate knowledge and experience already exist. DORP thinks along with you about the study design, what patient numbers are required (and available), how many centers to include, and whether the budget is complete. We advise on suitable financiers and subsidiary applications. We also offer expertise on the coordination between study management, data management, monitoring and statistics. Our Knowledge Base includes tips such as how to improve patient recruitment, and tools to support you through the different phases of your clinical trial such as study preparation, monitoring and more.

A bigger picture
Through our involvement in various studies, we sometimes identify bottlenecks that are not study-specific, but rather indicative of a more general problem faced by clinical investigators. As part of our service, we bring these subjects to the attention of collaborative partners and parties that have expertise in this area.

About DORP
DORP started in 2018 as a consortium of the Dutch Colorectal Cancer Group (DCCG), Borstkanker Onderzoek Groep (BOOG), Stichting Hemato -Oncologie voor Volwassenen Nederland (HOVON), the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL) and Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland (IKNL) to facilitate clinicial research in order to efficiently improve care and provide better treatment for more patients in the oncological field.
