ZonMW awarded a Good Use of Medicines (Goed Geneesmiddelen Gebruik) grant to a collaboration between the Departments of Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Led by Jeroen Hermanides, the researchers are investigating the extent to which the use of so-called SGLT2 inhibitors before and after heart surgery can prevent acute kidney damage. Many patients suffer more or less kidney damage after such an operation. The study is being conducted in several cardiac surgery centers in the Netherlands.
