Women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) often experience physical, psychological, and sexual complications.
Recognizing the need for assistance, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport designated Amsterdam UMC as an expertise center for restorative surgeries and sexological aid for affected women. Led by gynecologist and study coordinator, Dr. Emmy van den Boogaard, researchers aim to determine the most effective and safe forms of assistance for these women, emphasizing functionality over aesthetics.
Despite the prevalence of physical and psychological challenges, restorative surgeries for FGM in the Netherlands are currently only covered for women with physical complaints. Dr. Van den Boogaard stresses the importance of broader coverage, advocating for assistance tailored to individual needs. The study, expected to last five years, aims to eliminate barriers to seeking help and ensure that women feel comfortable and satisfied with the assistance they receive.
