Focus of research
My research interest is to understand the pathophysiology, epidemiology and impact of invasive fungal infections in order to identify risk factors and optimize diagnostics and treatment. Focussing on: 1. fungal infections in our globalizing world in which emerging threats are coming our way. Through epidemiological and clinical research I aim to: - find the optimal diagnostic strategy for Candida auris, - evaluate the impact of Aspergillus and Mucorales in patients with influenza and COVID-19. And understand the exposure risk to explain differences between countries using air samples in a joint study with Wageningen University and Research. - evaluate the impact of Histoplasmosis in The Netherlands and try to validate a new test to screen for histoplasmosis in risk groups 2. fungal infections in the growing population of immunosuppressed patients (especially hematology patients). Using clinical research I aim to optimize diagnostic methods for Aspergillus, Mucorales and Candida spp. 3. emerging fields. I aim to understand the function and biology of mycoviridae and their virulence on fungi using fundamental research in order to eventually find new treatment options for fungal infections in a joint study with Wageningen University and Research. |
