Focus of research
Marieke Bak works as assistant professor at the department of Ethics, Law and Humanities. She is a bioethicist with a strong interest in technology and innovation, as well as in international health policy. She received her PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2021, with a thesis about the ethics of big data in a European cardiac arrest research project (ESCAPE-NET), and during that time also worked as a visiting scholar at the Oxford Internet Institute. In her work she aims to embed ethics into practice through a combination of empirical research, normative theoretical analysis and close collaboration with different stakeholders.
Her current research focus is on the ethics of data-driven care, which includes the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI). She leads the ELSI work package of several interdisciplinary national and EU projects and supervises PhD candidates (PROFID, BECA). In addition, she teaches medical ethics courses, is a member of the Amsterdam UMC biobanking ethics committee, and coordinates an interdisciplinary working group on ‘Technology and Good Care’. Marieke Bak is a board member of the Amsterdam Public Health Institute’s Personalized Medicine programme and of the Dutch Society of Bioethics. She has a second affiliation as a Senior Research Associate with the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany.
