The Universiteiten van Nederland (UNL) has established 4 different types of PhD candidates, based on how the PhD trajectory is funded:

  1. Employee (1A. Employee-PhD, i.e. contract as PhD (researcher) with the University, AMC or AMR BV; 1B. Regular employee pursuing a PhD, i.e. contract with another role with the University, AMC or AMR BV with time allocated for your PhD research).
  2. Grant holder PhD candidates (2A. Grant holder UMC; 2B. External grant holder, i.e. an external grant such as the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC), Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), etc.
  3. Externally funded PhD candidate, i.e. contract with another private/public institution (e.g. GGD, Sanquin, another hospital or health provider) to perform research related to the PhD trajectory.
  4. External PhD candidate, i.e. without any additional funding and/or time for the PhD trajectory (at own time and with own financial resources).
