4 talented scientists from Amsterdam UMC, one of which is a part of Cancer Center Amsterdam and AI&II, will receive a Vidi grant of up to 850,000 euros from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). This will allow them to develop an innovative line of research and build their own research group.
From intestinal inflammation to intestinal healing by tuft cells
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is a global health problem with very limited treatment options. The problem is that damages in the intestinal wall do not heal properly. Recently, researchers have identified an intestinal cell type that is crucial for repairing the intestinal wall after injury. These cells are called tuft cells and use signals from the immune system to activate the healing process. Jochem Bernink will investigate how the immune system and tuft cells work together to repair the intestinal wall and how this cooperation may be impaired in IBD. The ultimate goal is to develop new treatment methods for chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
