We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming symposium: Contingency, Culture & Oncology – Interdisciplinary perspectives on existential care through arts-based research in oncology

📅 Date:Friday October 31
🕐 Time:09:30 – 16:30
🍷 Followed by drinks
📍Zaal 't IJ, RDC Adore, Van der Boechorststraat 6B, 1081 BT Amsterdam

The research line ‘Contingency, Culture & Oncology’ (CCO) of the department of Medical Oncology (Amsterdam UMC) organizes the first edition of the CCO symposium on Friday October 31st.

The CCO research line focuses on investigating the experience of (incurable) cancer as a form of contingency: a life-altering event that could have unfolded differently and raises existential questions, such as loss of meaning and purpose in life. Due to innovations in systemic anticancer treatment, such as immunotherapy and targeted therapies, people are living longer with advanced disease, which may create a need to integrate this experience into the life story. In collaboration with various partners from diverse institutions, we investigate how patients cope with this in daily life and the role art and culture play as sources of meaning-making. Additionally, we develop and evaluate interventions to better support people with advanced cancer in dealing with existential issues.

During this event, speakers will reflect from their own fields on theoretical, methodological, ethical and practical opportunities and challenges related to co-creative research within supportive care in oncology.
