Theme Systemic and mucosal immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccine - insights from the Swedish COMMUNITY study

General

Sanquin Guest lecture by Dr. Charlotte Thålin, Karolinska Institute, Department of Clinical Sciences, Danderyd Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

The host will be: Gestur Vidarsson

The COMMUNITY (COVID-19 Immunity) study was initiated at Danderyd Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, April 2020, and comprises a large longitudinal cohort including 2149 healthcare workers and 118 covid-19 patients sampled every 4th month. The overall aim is to obtain deep understanding of the generation and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 immunity (humoral, cellular) following primary infection and vaccination.

Dr Thålins interest in the immune system developed during her PhD studies when investigating the role of neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in cancer biology. Her research team at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Danderyd Hospital, focuses on NETs in cancer and cancer associated thrombosis and, recently, on immune responses following COVID-19 infection and vaccination. Specific areas of interest are the impact of prior infection on vaccine induced immune responses, referred to as hybrid immunity. As a physician at the department of medicine and infection, Danderyd Hospital, Dr Thålin divides her time between clinical work and research.
