Many patients with a brain tumor suffer from tension or anxiety. This can have a major impact on their daily lives. Researchers from Cancer Center Amsterdam have initiated a study to see if treatment with cannabidiol (CBD) can alleviate these complaints.

CBD is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana) after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC gives the “high” feeling that people can recognize from smoking marijuana. Pure CBD does not cause this effect and also does not have any abuse or dependence potential, according to the World Health Organization. CBD can have a calming effect and there is some evidence it can help with anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain and addiction.

Trial plan
Researchers at Cancer Center Amsterdam researchers are conducting a trial to see if CBD can alleviate fatigue or mood complaints and improve the quality of life for patients with brain cancer. The trial aims to enroll 55 patients who will be randomly assigned to take CBD or placebo tablets 4 times per day for 3 weeks, followed by a break of 2 weeks, and then 3 weeks more weeks of treatment. Over the 8-week test period, patients are asked to come to the hospital four times to provide blood samples. In addition, the patients will complete online questionnaires.

Would you like to participate in the research?
Patients with a brain tumor (glioma) who have not had surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatment in the past two months and suffer from tension or anxiety can participate. During the study, patients may not use any other cannabis products. The CBD that the patients receive in this study has been tested for purity and is a higher dosage than what can be bought at the drugstore. Interested? Please contact the researcher by phone 06-15930375 or via email grip_CBD@amsterdamumc.nl. Results of the trial will be reported in three to five years. Positive results may lead to the future approval of CBD for the treatment of anxiety and tension in patients with a brain tumor. Read the article in Dutch here
