On Thursday, July 10, a special guest from England is welcomed at Amsterdam UMC: illustrator, animator, and science communicator Lizah van der Aart. Lizah is invited by Abdel Abdellaoui, researcher at the department of Psychiatry of Amsterdam UMC, to talk about the sense - and nonsense - of science communication on social media, and how to approach visual storytelling.

Abdel Abdellaoui, researcher at the department of Psychiatry of Amsterdam UMC and laureate of the Amsterdam UMC Fellowship (among others),kindly invites researchers of Amsterdam UMC to join a seminar on the art of science communication with Lizah van der Aart. He is enthusiastic about how visual artwork can make your scientific research more attractive and understandable for a larger audience. It is a great way to get a complex scientific message across.

Science illustrations

"What if we put a nuclear submarine in space? How do we know a dinosaur's temperature? What if we put a pool on the moon?" Are all wacky questions that Lizah van der Aart answered in YouTube videos. Lizah is a popular science illustrator whose work explains complex topics to a general audience with playful and scientifically accurate visuals. They recently made a comic to support Abdel Abdellaoui et al's new paper in Nature Human Behavior (link to comic) to help the work reach a wider audience. Their artwork is currently featured on the front page of Nature Human Behavior.
