The start of wave 13 of lateralization within Amsterdam UMC is in sight. This wave includes the relocation of about 700 employees to the Research & Diagnostics Center (RDC) ADORE at location VUmc. In addition, some parts of Pathology are moving from location VUmc to location AMC.

Wave 13 deals with the total move into the newly built Research & Diagnostics Center ADORE, with shifts from Divisions 5 and 9. These are largely internal moves at location VUmc, such as from the CCA, the outpatient clinic and the E-building (pathology building). But there is also movement from Free University buildings such as the Medical Faculty and the W&N building.

There are also departments moving from location AMC to the RDC building:

  • Human Genetics (genome analysis section and research groups oncogenomics and epigenetics);
  • LEXOR (Laboratory of Experimental Oncology and Radiobiology, formerly CEMM);
    Pathology;
  • Immuno-Hematology (EXIM).

In total, some 700 colleagues are moving to the RDC.

Research & Diagnostics Center ADORE

The Research & Diagnostics Center ADORE (RDC ADORE) will house the research laboratories for Amsterdam UMC's research groups in the fields of oncology and neuroscience research. The diagnostic laboratories of Human Genetics and part of the diagnostic laboratories of Pathology will also move into the building.

RDC ADORE will be a research center in which the disciplines of neurology and oncology will work closely together. The cross-fertilization between cancer researchers and neuroscientists should lead to new diagnostics and new therapies, which will help people with cancer and brain diseases. The research is done together with small and medium-sized companies, the pharmaceutical industry and knowledge institutions such as the Vrije Universiteit and the University of Amsterdam.

Planning

The move-in of the ADORE Research & Diagnostics Center will begin in December. There will be a 3-week cycle of moves for each floor: 1 week of preparation, 1 week of moving in and 1 week of aftercare. All departments are expected to be moved to the RDC by May 2025. Future users of the RDC can find information about the building on a special SharePoint site. This site will be completed in the coming weeks.

Lateralization to AMC location

From the Pathology Department, the histology lab, immuno-histochemistry lab and neuro lab are lateralizing to location AMC. This will allow them to best serve both locations.

Lateralization

Since 2018, shifts and relocations have been taking place between location AMC and location VUmc. We call the process of redistribution of tasks and specialties between the two locations lateralization. Departments that shift simultaneously are together in a so-called wave. By now, 12 waves have taken place. Wave 13 is scheduled to start in December 2024 and continue through May 2025.
