As of January 1, 2022, ZonMw, Alzheimer Nederland, and the Dutch Brain Foundation have renewed their collaboration with Hersenonderzoek.nl for three more years. In addition, as of 2022, this collaboration is supported by our research institute Amsterdam Neuroscience. The Alzheimer Center Amsterdam, initiator and executor of Hersenonderzoek.nl will stay responsible for Hersenonderzoek.nl. We will jointly continue our work to unravel the origins of various brain diseases.

Accelerating research into brain diseases

Hersenonderzoek.nl is an online platform that helps researchers find the right participants for their studies. With the renewed funding they will be able to continue their work, which aims to accelerate research into brain diseases. More research is needed to cure brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, other forms of dementia, Parkinson's, or MS. Globally, there is a severe shortage of healthy controls and patients to participate in brain research, which results in research delays.

How Hersenonderzoek.nl works

Hersenonderzoek.nl invites people from all over the Netherlands to participate in brain research. It is an online platform where healthy people and patients can register their interest in participating in brain research. Neuroscientists can call on this registry, and indicate their search for participants for a specific research project. The platform brings researchers into contact with people who want to participate in their studies.

Arjen Brussaard, director of Amsterdam Neuroscience: “The greatest asset of Hersenonderzoek.nl is that the platform allows researchers to harvest trial-ready subjects.”

Expanding the participant database

Hersenonderzoek.nl has already been able to reach many people to join the platform and subscribe to participate in research projects, currently, more than 26,000 participants are registered. However, their goal is to make research known and accessible to everyone in the Netherlands. Therefore, Hersenonderzoek.nl wants to address more people of different age groups, socio-economic status, and cultural backgrounds interested in brain research.

In the coming years, Hersenonderzoek.nl aims to become a sustainable platform. To do so, they will focus on sharing knowledge - both nationally and internationally - so that we can all continue to learn, innovate and improve.
