Researchers of the department of Medicine for Older People of Amsterdam UMC have obtained an important grant from the Ministry of Health Welfare and Sport to continue the program “Leren van data”, together with collaborating partners NIVEL and Verenso. From Amsterdam UMC, the program is led by Prof. Martin Smalbrugge and dr. Karlijn Joling. The new stage of the program started in January 2025 and will last five years.
Working towards a learning health system
The aim of the program is to work towards a learning health system in the intramural nursing home care. Routine care data recorded by elderly care physicians in electronic health records will be reused for quality improvement, policy and scientific research.
The program will focus at the further development of standardized registration of data (uniformity of language) and making relevant information insightful for elderly care physicians. This will be done by, for example, using data from a network of nursing home organizations which participate in yearly quality assessments, and generating national reports, audit and feedback information and trend analyses. In addition, the national Registry ‘Leren van data in verpleeghuizen’ will be further developed and extended. Alignment will take place with relevant organizations when conducting the programs activities, such as ActiZ, Patiëntenfederatie Nederland, de academische werkplaatsen ouderenzorg (SANO), ZorgthuisNL and software developers of electronic health records.
The research team of Amsterdam UMC will further develop the network in which more than 20 nursing home organizations across the country yearly participate in quality of care assessments and receive audit and feedback information to improve the quality of their care. In addition, the team will set up a surveillance to monitor (viral) respiratory infections.
