Focus of research
Jacqueline Hugtenburg is associate professor Pharmacoepidemology and Pharmaceutical Care. She performs research in the field of epidemiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapy and health services research. The efficient and safe use of medicines is the main subject of her research at the Amsterdam UMC. The projects focus on medication and polypharmacy related problems and medication adherence of patients with chronic diseases, particularly those with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus type 2, as well as of patients with psychiatric diseases and patients with cancer. Within research she develops and implements tools and interventions which support healthcare providers in providing pharmaceutical care for patients. As a result both the quality of healthcare provision and the health of patients improve. Involvement of stakeholders is a strategy that she includes in her practice research in pharmacy. This has resulted in collaborations with other (hospital) pharmacists, GPs, medical specialists, including oncologists, hematologists, lung specialists, psychiatrist and nurses which has resulted in numerous PhD theses, scientific publications, changes in treatment guidelines and better healthcare. In addition, another effective implementation strategy is the provision of information and education on the use of tools and interventions, which result in a better acceptance of the new way of healthcare provision and increased fidelity of the tools and intervention use.
Most of the innovations in healthcare were tested and evaluated in daily clinical and/or pharmacy practice. Based on the feedback gathered from the healthcare providers the innovations were adapted in a way that they fitted very well in daily routines thereby becoming the new ways of working. By testing and evaluating innovations in daily clinical practice, healthcare providers were able to participate in research and research became connected with practice. To support these actions she initiated the academic network of pharmacists in Amsterdam, Saphia (Scientific association of pharmacists in Amsterdam).
Hugtenburg also performed clinical trials on de effects and side effects of medicines.
