Instructions for submitting a request for exemption from the educational requirement

If a candidate does not hold a recognized Dutch Master's degree, a request for exemption from the statutory Dutch educational requirement must be submitted.

Several documents are required when submitting an exemption request. Please adhere to the order of documents indicated below: first the form, followed by proof of identity and the CV, and then educational documents (arranged from most recent to oldest). Please also note the points of attention listed.

Incomplete applications will not be processed. The four-week processing period begins only once the complete file has been received by the secretariat of the Doctorate Board. Naturally, the aim is to process files as quickly as possible.

Please contact the Office of Doctorate Affairs via email  with the necessary documents to apply for exemption. The list of required documents is provided below.

Necessary documents:

Required documents (see also the exemption request form itself):

  • Exemption request form (educational requirement). Fully completed and signed by the candidate and the prospective supervisor (please ensure you use the latest version of the form)
  • Copy of passport or other legally accepted form of identification*
    • If the identity document does not contain all required information: marriage certificate, birth certificate, civil status extract, deed of name change
  • Curriculum vitae (recent—preferably no older than 2 months; concise—no longer than 2 pages; do not include list of publications)
  • Complete educational documents (all diplomas, all grade transcripts, translations if necessary, ordered from highest degree obtained to lowest degree obtained):
    • Master’s degree
    • Master’s transcript/grade list
    • If available: Master’s diploma supplement
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Bachelor’s transcript/grade list
    • If available: Bachelor’s diploma supplement
    • Etc.
  • Do not include:
    • Certificates from courses, etc., that do not lead to a recognized degree
    • Secondary school documents (if these are required, they will be requested separately)
  • You may include:
    • Proof of medical specialization
    • Documents regarding other Master's degrees obtained

Submit the dossier to the Amsterdam UMC Bureau Promotiezaken via this email address: promotiezaken@amc.nl

*Accepted forms of identification:

Passport, Residence Permit (front and back), European Identity Card (Carta d’Identità, etc.; please ensure all required information is visible). Other documents will NOT be accepted. No driver's licenses; no identity documents from non-EU countries other than passports.

The document must clearly show the following:

  • Surname

  • First names

  • Gender (M, F, X)

  • Nationality

  • Date of birth

  • Place of birth

  • Country of birth

  • Expiry date

If the identity document does not contain all the details listed above, or if the personal details on the identity document differ from those on one or more educational documents, proof of the change must be submitted. This usually concerns a name change, documented by a marriage certificate, birth certificate, civil registry extract, or deed of name change.

Tips:

**Certified true copies
Printed versions or copies of the original documents that are sealed, stamped and signed by the authorizing registrar or by a notary to certify that the printed versions or copies are true

  • The Office of Doctorate Affairs also accepts official eTranscripts, which are certified PDFs with an electronic signature from the authorizing registrar
  • Not accepted are regular photocopies or scans of originals or certified true copies
