To do:

The dean may grant the ius promovendi to an associate professor, according to the procedure as written in the document (in Dutch) below. In summary:

Principles:

  • At their request, the ius promovendi can be granted to an associate professor (UHD)
  • A sentence is included in the dean's letter concerning the Appointment of the Associate Professor, stating that an associate professor can apply for the ius promovendi from the dean if desired
  • The associate professor is granted the ius promovendi for the duration of the appointment at Amsterdam UMC
  • Of course, they must adhere to the code of conduct and the Research Code. If they do not, the ius promovendi can be withdrawn

Note: Please be aware that the ius promovendi should be applied for in an early stage of the PhD trajectory. If applicable the composition of the doctorate committee may need to be adjusted. The dean needs to approve this

Necessary documents:

To be eligible for the ius promovendi, you need to submit a request to the dean, through the Office of Doctorate's or Dean's Affairs.

The procedure for awarding the ius promovendi has been harmonised for the UvA and VU Associate Professors (AP), as follows:

  • The associate professor must submit a request for awarding the ius promovendi and include a written and substantiated statement of support from the head of department to this request. The head of department must take into account the candidate's personal and scientific integrity and societal commitment
  • The associate professor sends the request to the Office of Doctorate's Affairs (AP with UvA affiliation) or to the Office of Dean's Affairs (AP withVU affiliation)
  • The department's employee submits the request to the applicable dean and reports his/her decision back to the associate professor
  • A formal letter from the dean confirms the awarding of the ius promovendi. This letter states that the supervisor contributes to the bond with the (strategy of the) organisation and the confirmation of (societal) interest. Attention is also requested for topics such as secondary activities, intellectual property and scientific integrity/research code

Note: PI appointment is not a requirement. Upon appointment as associate professor, the CV has been assessed and the requirement of two completed PhD's as co-supervisor has been met
