On May 20th the AMS annual PhD Meeting took place, an event organized for (and by) AMS PhD-candidates. The day started with a collective lunch, after which a workshop about effective communication was given by Jordy Cabanas-Danes and Mandy Hu from the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School. Everyone had been asked to fill in the DISC personality model to assess their personality type and work style. During the workshop tips and practical tools were provided on how to communicate and work together with colleagues with different types of personalities.
After a short break, a second workshop was given by Gerben ter Riet and Gowri Gopalakrishna about responsible research practices & principled negotiation. The Dilemma Game was used to discuss several ethical dilemmas that can be encountered during a PhD trajectory. After receiving background information about principled negotiation, the negotiation tips were put into practice in small groups, in which negotiation examples were discussed that could occur within a PhD trajectory.
We ended the PhD meeting with drinks at ‘De Bosbaan’. We look back on a very successful PhD meeting and hope to see everyone at our next event!
