Recent research by Erik Sistermans and Jasper Linthorst, affiliated with the research institutes: Amsterdam Reproduction and Development and Amsterdam Cancer Centre, reveals that a pregnant woman's genetic background significantly influences the effectiveness of Non-Invasive Prenatal Tests (NIPTs). Their study highlights how a specific genetic variant, present in about 7% of the Dutch population, can lead to inconclusive results and impact test sensitivity.

These groundbreaking findings not only underscore the complexities of prenatal screening but also suggest that genetic factors may affect the reliability of other emerging cell-free DNA tests, including those for cancer. This research paves the way for more personalized approaches in prenatal care and beyond.
