The Department of Elderly Care Medicine of Amsterdam UMC is committed to achieving the best possible quality of life for (older) people with vulnerable health. We do so through research, knowledge sharing, education and training, in close collaboration with the practitioners and the elderly themselves.

About us

The Department of Elderly Care Medicine (situated at the VUmc location) provides resident training in elderly care medicine, student education in the field, scientific research, and continuing education. Through our academic network, we maintain active relationships with many healthcare providers outside our organisation.

The department stands for the best possible quality of life for (older) people with vulnerable health and aims to be progressive and inspiring in this regard. In addition to continuous attention to developments within the profession, and our academic role, we aim to further develop and strengthen the position of our specialty by pooling our expertise.

There are four sections within the department:

  • Gerion

  • Research
  • Student Education
  • UNO (University Network of Organizations for care for older adults)

Research

Our researchers conduct scientific research with the aim of improving the quality of elderly care medicine. They do so within the University Network of Organizations for care for older adults. Here, researchers and healthcare professionals connect scientific knowledge with daily practice in the 24 affiliated healthcare organisations. For more information: UNO Amsterdam

All scientific research is carried out within the Amsterdam Public Health institute (APH), one of the research institutes of Amsterdam UMC.

The department consists of four research teams:

  • Geriatric rehabilitation and network care
  • Infectious diseases
  • Learning from data
  • Care for vulnerable older people in the last phase of life.
Our researchers also supervise residents and medical students in carrying out a scientific research internship.

Education

Our department plays an important role in medical education. In the bachelor's programme, we provide tutorial groups, practicals, (patient) lectures, assessments and clinical placement in care. In the master's programme, our lecturers provide the KTO education (which precedes the clerkship in elderly care medicine). The department of Elderly Care Medicine is also involved in the senior clerkship and the elective rotation in elderly care medicine.

Within the department, the Gerion section offers education and postgraduate training for healthcare professionals in elderly care:

  • The resident training in elderly care medicine

  • Advanced training programmes, such as geriatric rehabilitation and psychogeriatrics.

  • Continuing education and courses for professionals working with older adults, including topics such as dementia, triage and challenging behavior.

At the department, it is possible to combine the resident training in elderly care medicine with conducting PhD research. This combination is called an AIOTO trajectory. More information: Voor voldoende en goed opgeleide zorgprofessionals | SBOH

Patient Care

In our University Elderly Practie (Universitaire Praktijk Ouderengeneeskunde, UPO) we treat elderly patients, and combine the knowledge of an elderly care specialist with that of our general practitioners.
