The research group of Prof. Saskia van Mil investigates the role of bile acid metabolism and the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) in liver energy metabolism. Using the new knowledge obtained, they aim to increase selectivity and efficacy of targeting FXR for NASH.

Dr. Gerdes is internist at the Department of Vascular Medicine. Being closely involved in the bariatric surgery program at Spaane Gasthuis in Hoofddorp, he has a longstanding interest in obesity and a research line on the metabolic consequences of obesity and the metabolic changes that bariatric surgery induces in liver and gut microbiome.
