Committee for Talent and Appointments
The Committee for Talent and Appointments (CTA) is an advice committee for the Deans of the Faculties of Medicine of the VU and of the UvA of Amsterdam UMC that provides independent advice to the Deans on the appointment of Associate Professors (UHD) and Professors. The goal of the CTA is to make policies concerning career steps more transparent for talents from within, as well as from outside of Amsterdam UMC.
Recognition & Rewards Culture Barometer (in English)
Since 2019, Dutch knowledge institutions (universities, umc's, KNAW) and science funders (NWO, ZonMw) have been working towards a more balanced and inclusive way of recognizing and rewarding of academic work. We want to create more space for diverse talent and for all career paths in the core domains in the umc: research, education, valorization/impact, leadership, and patient care. Amsterdam UMC is a partner in this program and is actively participating in it.
All academic staff will be asked to complete a questionnaire, the so-called Recognition & Rewards Culture Barometer, for the second and last time. In it, we ask whether the ambitions of the national programme Recognition & Rewards arerecognized, whether they are translated into policy, and whether they are visible in daily activities, for example by being allowed to choose (in agreement with their line manager) for a specific career path. Whether you are an enthusiastic PhD candidate or a seasoned professor, an inspired university lecturer or a passionate Principal Investigator; your opinion counts.
The experiences we gather are important in determining where we stand as an organization and where development is needed. The deans of the faculties of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Saskia Peerdeman (VU) and Prof. Dr. Yvo Roos (UvA) emphasize the importance of the Recognition & Rewards questionnaire: “Your experiences are crucial to painting a representative picture of how Amsterdam UMC recognizes and appreciates the work of academics. So please fill in the survey and let us know what you think.”
On behalf of the deans, respondents receive on January 26th an invitation to fill out the questionnaire. Deadline for filling out the quesionaire is February 6th. It takes 15–20 minutes to complete. It is not possible to save your answers and return to the questionnaire later. More information on the questionnaire can be found on the website of Recognition & Rewards: Q&A for the Recognition & Rewards Culture Barometer - Recognition & Rewards.
The first Culture Barometer took place in January 2024. The research is this time again being conducted by the independent agency Berenschot, on behalf of the national Recognition & Appreciation programme. The collected data remains with Berenschot and is only shared at organizational level with institutions and the Recognition & Appreciation programme team.
Curious about the results of the previous measurement? You can view them here. The results of the current measurement are expected in early May 2026 and will, of course, be shared.

How to become Associate Professor or Professor?
Candidates who want to become Associate Professor or Professor are nominated by their department head to the dean. They are requested to fill out the Qualification Portfolio of Amsterdam UMC (QP, see the link below) that is evaluated by the CTA. In line with Recognition and Rewards, the QP discerns the following profiles:
- Research profile
- Educational profile
- Valorisation and societal impact profile
- Clinical profile
- Management & Leadership profile
In the QP, the candidates include their CV and narratives on their career choices and achievements. In case of a Valorisation, Clinical or Leadership profile, activities and achievements should also be included in the Research or Education profile. Please note that appointments transcend mere procedural formalities such as meeting the requirements on a checklist. In each case, the institutional needs and individual's talents should be aligned to foster academic excellence and institutional advancement. To this end, the Qualification Portfolio should clearly describe how the candidate fits within the strategic objectives of their department and within the broader academic environment of Amsterdam UMC. The CTA is now finalising the criteria for UD, UHD and Professor for each of the profiles mentioned above, as well as revising the Qualification Portfolio. These will be published in due course.
Please note that it is a prerequisite to have obtained the nationally recognized BKO qualification (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs or University Teaching Qualification) in order to qualify for promotion to UHD and Professor. For more information on how to obtain the BKO, please consult the BKO website of Amsterdam UMC.
The Qualification Portfolio is accompanied by recommendation letters from the department head, division leader, director of the research institute and/or the vice-dean of Education. The full dossier (QP, letters and BKO certificate) is evaluated by the CTA. Based on these documents, the CTA provides independent advice on the proposed career step to UHD or Professor to the dean.
For more information about the procedures and required documents, please contact the Dean’s Offices (see contact details below) and K2.
