Committee for Talent and Appointments

Back to menu

The Committee for Talent and Appointments (CTA) has been established by the Deans of the Faculties of Medicine of the VU and of the UvA at both locations of Amsterdam UMC (VUmc and AMC) at Amsterdam UMC to harmonize their talent policy for academic careers, as well as harmonize the appointments policy for associate professors and full professors (UHD and HL). The CTA is a subcommittee of the Amsterdam Research Board (ARB).

The CTA has been assigned by the Executive Board to shape the talent policies of academic staff and to provide advice to the Deans on the appointment of mid-career and top level academics (i.e. Associate Professors (UHD) and Professors (HL)). The CTA also provides advice on the implementation of Recognition and Rewards (R&R), which advocates a broader evaluation of academic staff, in line with the current national and international discussion on this topic and developments at the UvA and VU. The goal of the CTA is to make appointment policies of Amsterdam UMC more transparent for talents from within, as well as from outside of Amsterdam UMC who wish to make career steps. The CTA is a subcommittee of the Amsterdam Research Board. Diversity and Inclusion will also be integrated into the talent policies by the CTA.

The CTA has developed a Qualification Portfolio along the principles of Recognition and Rewards (R&R) to evaluate CVs. In this Portfolio, candidates can present themselves by way of an ‘evidence based CV’, by combining narratives providing context to their career choices, with qualitative and quantitative indicators of their academic achievements. They need to excel in at least two of the following domains: research; education; clinical work; valorization and/or academic leadership.

The development of new talent policies by the CTA will build on existing career instruments, such as the Principal Investigator system, Postdoc Career Bridging Grant, Amsterdam UMC Fellowship and Tenure Track. Currently, the CTA broadens its scope towards talented researchers in different stages of their careers by developing postdoc policies and providing advice on Starters Grants for Assistant Professors and nurses with aspirations in research.

CTA in Amsterdam UMC

Procedures for appointments, for associate professors (Universitair HoofdDocent) full professors (Hoogleraar) and professors by special appointment (Bijzonder Hoogleraar), and the first re-appointment (herbenoeming) after five years of a professor, are different in VU and UvA and have to be met. Please contact the Dean’s Offices in AMC and VUmc for the required information and documents (see contact details below).

For the evaluation of a candidate for a career step or for appointment by the CTA, the information on a candidate’s career is gathered in the Qualification Portfolio (this includes the CV and publication list).

Qualification Portfolio

The instructions on how to fill out the Qualification Portfolio can be obtained at the Deans’ offices (contact details below). Please be aware that it is a prerequisite to have obtained the nationally recognized BKO qualification (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs or UTQ; University Teaching Qualification) in order to qualify for promotion to UHD, and consequently for professorship. For more information on how to obtain the BKO, please consult the BKO website of Amsterdam UMC.

In addition to the Qualification Portfolio, the following letters of recommendation are required for evaluation in the CTA:

  1. A letter from the head of department, containing the motivation for appointment as well as a description of the place in the organization (preferably including an organization chart) of the candidate.
  2. A supporting letter from the head of division
  3. A supporting letter from the director of the (main) research institute

Please note that for the first five year evaluation of professorships the previous-, and new five year plan are also required. (The following five year evaluations after 10 years, 15 years, etcetera are handled by the Dean without consultation of the CTA).
