The Department of Public and Occupational Health at Amsterdam UMC provides patient care, education, and, above all, conducts research in the field of work and health. The Academic Centre for Clinical Occupational Health serves as the central platform for these activities. It brings together researchers, physicians, occupational health services, and general practitioners to collaborate on improving work-related health. Its main areas of focus are respiratory diseases, skin diseases, orthopaedics, cardiology, and neurology.

About us

The mission of the Academic Centre is to improve the health, recovery, and sustainable employability of workers by strengthening collaboration, facilitating knowledge exchange, and translating research findings into clinical and occupational health practice.

Vision and mission
The Academic Centre for Clinical Occupational Health is a collaborative platform where research, education, and clinical practice come together to improve work and health. By fostering collaboration between researchers, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, we generate new knowledge, stimulate innovation, and build strong interdisciplinary networks.

Core activities
The Academic Centre brings together research on work and health and strengthens ongoing research programmes. We also initiate new research projects, support grant applications, and develop a strong network of researchers and healthcare professionals. In addition, we design and deliver education and training programmes on work and health for healthcare professionals. In this way, we promote the exchange of knowledge and facilitate its translation into everyday clinical and occupational health practice.

Research

Within the Academic Centre for Clinical Occupational Medicine, research, education, and digital innovation are carried out in the field of work and health.

The Training Days project (funded by ZonMw through the Innovative Occupational Health Care programme) was launched in 2025 and will result in an interprofessional training programme for healthcare and occupational health professionals in 2026.

In addition, the Academic Centre hosts several research programmes led by multidisciplinary teams of researchers and medical specialists. Key research themes include return to work after surgery (Back at Work Surgery), vision and work (4VIPs@WORK and the EYE-Work Inventory), and occupational skin diseases (including the COAT study, chromate allergy, early detection, and biomarker research).

Other research focuses on perioperative recovery in cardiology, orthopaedics, gynaecology, and rehabilitation medicine, as well as sarcoidosis as a potentially work-related disease. The programme Work as Medicine is also part of the Academic Centre's research portfolio.

Together, these projects aim to improve work participation, promote prevention, and support recovery among working people.

Education

Education within the Academic Centre for Clinical Occupational Health is delivered through the Coronel Academy, in collaboration with specialists from Amsterdam UMC and other hospitals and organisations, including the Dutch National Expertise Centre for Occupational Diseases Caused by Hazardous Substances (LEXCES).

Each year, the Coronel Academy develops a programme of courses covering a range of medical topics, such as Occupational Allergic Asthma, Annoying Noise, and Managing Physically Demanding Work. The programme is being further expanded with courses focusing on the role of work in cardiology, orthopaedics, dermatology, gynaecology, and rehabilitation medicine.

Careers

A positive and collaborative working environment is central to the Academic Centre for Clinical Occupational Medicine. We value an open and transparent consultation structure, where there is ample opportunity for collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and constructive feedback. Our culture is inclusive and supportive, enabling researchers, physicians, and other professionals to learn from one another and work together towards shared goals. This fosters strong collaboration, encourages innovation, and strengthens the connections within the Academic Centre.
