The Pediatric Research Evaluation Network (PREN) Amsterdam was established in 2018. PREN has established a structural basis for conducting pediatric health care evaluation research within general pediatrics. This takes place through solid cooperation and the setting up of a good infrastructure between Emma Children's Hospital-Amsterdam UMC and 9 general hospitals (Tergooi MC, Flevoziekenhuis, Zaans Medisch Centrum, Dijklander hospital, OLVG, BovenIJ hospital, Spaarnegasthuis, Amstelland hospital, NoordWest hospital group, Red Cross Hospital) in the Amsterdam region. Each hospital has a representative within PREN.

Pediatric health care evaluation

The vision of PREN is that every child should receive the best substantiated care at any time and in any place. We want to create a learning and change culture based on scientific knowledge from healthcare evaluation research.

PREN's mission
  1. Health care evaluation is part of general pediatric patient care.
  2. Education and training to promote health care evaluation among interns, physician assistants and pediatricians and other hospital employees.
  3. Encouraging sustainable care for all children, taking into account the burden on the environment.
PREN's goals
  1. Health care evaluation:

    • Improve care in a valid, scientifically substantiated manner.
    • Setting up a collaboration network.
    • Faster completion of the knowledge-quality cycle and adjustment of guidelines.
    • Determining clinically and patient relevant outcome measures.
  2. Education and training:

    • Deployment and involvement of medical residents and science students.
  3. Sustainable care:

    • Striving to reduce the carbon footprint.
    • Increasing sustainability within child care.

Projects

  • Oxykids RCT study
This study aims to establish safe and effective oxygen saturation limits for children admitted with shortness of breath. In this study we compare a saturation limit of 88% with the currently common limit of 92%.
  • EOS calculator cluster RCT
This healthcare evaluation study aims to evaluate whether applying the EOS calculator to newborns with an increased risk of EOS influences antibiotic use and clinical course compared to the current NVK guideline.
  • NeoPartner RCT study
The neoPARTNER study aims to improve care for parents and neonates in the neonatology department through optimal parental involvement, with a beneficial effect in the short and long term.
  • Salbutamol IV observational studyThe aim of this care evaluation is to evaluate in practice the revised NVK guideline “Asthma in Children”, published in November 2022, in which treatment with Salbutamol IV in second line is possible.
