OCD are often described as a sequelae of inversion sprains. Based on the literature, the incidence is approximately 0.09%. Biomechanical trauma mechanisms has gained the most attention.
The trauma hypothesis assumes that an inversion trauma or fracture of the ankle causes a flake or fissure of the cartilage and micro fractures of the subchondral bone. However, other research groups found clear indications that OCDs are quite similar to arthritis. In this research project we aim to reach an understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanism of OCDs in the ankle.
