Theme Examining the Development and Consequences of RBC Alloimmunization

Brief Outline Talk
This talk will explore the major factors that influence both the initiation and outcomes of RBC alloimmunization. It will examine the complex interplay between genetic, cellular, and molecular mechanisms that drive the development of immune responses against transfused, RBC antigens. In particular, emphasis will be placed on the key immune components that mediate the formation of alloantibodies and shape the clinical consequences of incompatible transfusion. It is hoped that this talk will provide insight into how these immune pathways interact to determine patient risk, transfusion safety, and long-term hematologic outcomes.

Biography
Dr. Stowell serves as the Vice Chair of Transfusion Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Mass General Brigham Endowed Chair, and Co-Director of the Harvard Medical School Glycomics Center. His research laboratory, supported by the NIH, Department of Defence, Gates Foundation, Burroughs Wellcome Trust, and the National Blood Foundation, focuses on uncovering the fundamental factors that influence the development and outcomes of alloimmunization in the context of transfusion medicine.
