As one of the very few academic research institutes that combine gastroenterology, endocrinology and metabolism, AGEM is uniquely positioned to tackle the abovementioned challenges.
Fueling the body’s machinery
AGEM mission
The AGEM mission is to perform research aimed at better understanding the underlying gastrointestinal, endocrine and metabolic mechanisms/processes involved in health and disease development, in order to improve the outcome for our patients.
The researchers in the AGEM institute closely collaborate with internal and external academic and commercial parties to perform research with a true impact on the current state-of-the-art. This impact is achieved at three important levels:
- Making fundamental discoveries of the mechanisms that maintain organ homeostasis in health and the way these are deregulated in disease;
- Translating the revolutionary advances made in molecular biology to modern medicine;
- Performing clinical research that truly improves our current algorithms for disease prevention and cure.
AGEM vision
The AGEM vision and goal is to unite the Amsterdam UMC research on gastrointestinal, endocrine and metabolic health and disease into a single research organization.
Within these research programs we aim to further develop strong research lines that belong to the top of the international basic, translational and clinical research in our field by contributing to important scientific advances and improving health, thereby limiting the impact of diseases in our focus areas.
