With the AGEM international student fellowship, the AGEM research institute allows (bio-) medical students to participate in an international research internship within the fields of gastroenterology, endocrinology and metabolism.
Eligibility requirements
The applicant
- The applicant must be an excellent (bio-)medical student from the UvA or the VU in or just finished with his/her master program and should have a clear link with an AGEM principal investigator.
- Students from other universities in the Netherlands are eligible to apply as long as they have a clear link with one of the research groups from the AMC or VUmc. This link should be stated in the accompanied motivation letter.
- The applicant should not already be enrolled in a PhD-project. The AGEM international student fellowship cannot be used for research that is part of his/her PhD-project.
- Preference goes to students that use this AGEM fellowship for their second master internship and already performed a master internship on a subject within the fields of the AGEM research programs.
The research project
- The proposed research project should fit well within the mission of the AGEM research institute.
- The AGEM mission is: ‘to perform research that promotes healthy nutrition and metabolism, prevents or cures gastrointestinal, endocrine and inherited and acquired metabolic disease and improves the outcomes of our patients.’
The international institute
- The applicant should state the reasons for choosing the particular international institute in the accompanying motivation letter.
The duration
- The fellowship is for a research project with the duration of a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months.
Finances
The grant is €500,00 per month. From the total amount, 2/3 will be paid at the start of the project and 1/3 will be paid after the project is finished and a final report of the project has been submitted and approved.
When granted this fellowship, an agreement with the AGEM research institute on the process of payment, and rights and obligations will have to be signed.
The AGEM grant can only be used for expenses directly related to staying abroad, such as accommodation, travel, and visa costs. the costs for the research project itself are excluded.

- Letter of recommendation of an AGEM principal investigator: In this letter the AGEM principal investigator should make a statement about the return potential of the student as a PhD candidate of AGEM/Amsterdam UMC.

Selection
The AGEM office will judge the applications on how well the student, the motivation and the proposed research fits with the goals and aims of the AGEM research institute. Also the likelihood that the applicant will return and bring back valuable expertise to the AGEM research institute will be taken into account.
