Giving away vaccines is also in our own interest': in an interview in the newspaper De Morgen, Marjolein van Egmond, researcher of AII, states that an extra 'booster shot' is not a priority: "You cannot solve a pandemic by dealing with it locally".
The UK is also going to offer its elderly and vulnerable citizens a third corona prick. 'Not wise, says Marjolein van Egmond. The rest of the world comes first'.
Is such an extra vaccination, a 'booster shot', medically necessary? Or is it, as the World Health Organisation argues, better from an immunological point of view to increase the vaccination level in poor countries? Rather the latter, says Marjolein van Egmond, professor of immunology at Amsterdam UMC and spokesperson for the Dutch Society for Immunology. "You don't solve a pandemic by tackling it locally."
