On March 15, AI&I researchers will lace up their running shoes for the Amstelveen Spring Marathon, raising funds for research into Post-Acute Infection Syndromes (PAIS). Every donation supports innovative projects to improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for PAIS patients. Support PAIS research, donate today!
Meet the Runner: Maria Thon
My name is Maria Thon, and I work at the Department of Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology at Amsterdam UMC as a Research Technician. This spring, I will be running the half marathon at the Amstelveen Lente Marathon.
Why I Run
What motivates me most is imagining how frustrating it must be for people with PAIS to no longer be able to trust your own body, being limited by exhaustion, pain, or brain fog, while doctors are still trying to understand the causes and find effective treatments.
Personal Motivation
I am personally motivated by having witnessed the devastating effects that an uncontrolled immune response can have on the body. This experience inspired me to support research into poorly understood immunological processes, so that patients affected by such conditions in the future can have better outcomes and hope.
The Importance of PAIS Research
Research is crucial because PAIS and related conditions often involve complex immune responses that are not yet fully understood. By studying these mechanisms, we can improve diagnostics, develop effective treatments, and ultimately help patients regain control over their health and daily lives.
Goals for the Fundraising Campaign
I hope to contribute to innovative scientific research that gives people living with PAIS more control over their bodies and lives. I also hope to raise awareness of how impactful and common these conditions are.
Marathon Preparation
I run recreationally twice a week with my local athletics club, and I make sure to do at least one extra solo run each week. My most recent race I completed in 2:04. I am following a training plan aimed at increasing my speed, with the goal of finishing the half marathon in under 2 hours. I focus on rest, consistency, and most importantly, enjoying the training.
