Focus of research
My research focusses on how the human complement system is regulated and its dysregulation observed in hematological, immunological and inflammatory diseases. By determining the causes of disbalance, points of therapeutic interventions are identified and explored to restore the complement system. Furthermore, understanding the consequences of interfering with this powerful and critical system has become even more relevant with the emerging novel therapeutics that target complement proteins. I investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of complement regulation by endogenous complement proteins and their role in diseases like for instance age-related macular degeneration, auto-immune hemolytic anemia, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.
