Marlies Schijven fulfills the profile “leading (clinical) scientific researcher who is active in a broader field than her own and a figurehead with insight into knowledge and research agendas in the broad field of healthcare”. With her experience as a surgeon and professor but also because of her administrative experience as a supervisor in healthcare and previous activities at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Schijven fits the sought-after profile well.
Schijven started her education at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, completed studies in health science and medicine at Maastricht University and obtained her PhD at Leiden University on Virtual Reality Simulation Techniques in Surgery, after which she focused on gastrointestinal laparoscopic surgery.
Since 2009, Schijven has been appointed staff surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Amsterdam UMC. In addition to her work as a surgeon, she leads research in “digital care transition” as a principal investigator and principal educator. She was appointed Professor of Surgery in 2015, with the chair: Simulation, Serious Gaming and Applied Mobile Healthcare in Amsterdam.
