Despite substantial interest in and application of co-creation, co-design and co-production since 2012, scholars have lacked in systematically and effectively contributing to theory-building of co-creation. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and APA PsycINFO, were searched from 2012. Of the 3,763 unique references identified through the comprehensive search strategy, 10 articles were included in the review. A quality assessment and data extraction for theory content was performed.

The systematic review showed that there is little indication of contemporary theory applications for the approaches of co-creation, co-design and co-production in public health research, yet helped to identify some usable theories and theoretical frameworks, in addition to delineating how and why the theories were used for such co-approaches.
