Focus of research
I am Dr. Mirthe Muilwijk, a postdoctoral researcher cardiovascular epidemiology at the department of Epidemiology & Data Science of Amsterdam UMC, and a registered epidemiologist. The main focus of my research is on ethnic differences in the risk of diabetes and its complications, using quantitative epidemiological methods. It often includes metabolomics to understand biological pathways. Moreover, I recently obtained a Postdoc Fellowship from Amsterdam Public Health to study diabetes complications in different ethnic groups, and the impact of the social and physical environment.
My background is in Biomedical Sciences, with a specialization in Toxicology and Environmental Health (Utrecht University). I conducted my master’s project, a risk assessment on E-waste recycling, at the Chulabhorn Research Institute in Bangkok. After graduation, I have worked at RIKILT WUR where I was involved in the European FoodIntegrity project. My PhD research focused on type 2 diabetes among South Asians using HELIUS data, as part of the EuroDHYAN project. During my PhD, I have obtained a travel grant to visit the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences, University of Glasgow. There, I used UK biobank data to investigate the contribution of type 2 diabetes to mortality and morbidity amongst Europeans and South Asians.
